I no longer have room on my shelves for new books.
Tragic.
But, determined to not let this minor setback impinge on the dopamine hits I get from buying books, I bought a Kindle - and with it came a 3-month free trial of Kindle Unlimited.
Kindle Unlimited is a massive catalogue of books available for 11-ish Canadian dollars a month - or in my case, a 3-month free trial - that lets you borrow up to 20 ebook titles at a time. The “Unlimited” part of the name is slightly deceptive.
That said, if you read a minimum of 3 books a week like I do in the summer months, Kindle Unlimited may be worth it. However: this only goes if you don’t mind reading self-published titles. I found it was the best place to find self-published romances - the ones with only the faintest whiff of a plot, propped up with a million tropes like ‘Brother’s Best Friend’, ‘Fake Dating’, and ‘Enemies to Lovers’. Easy, breezy reading, often set in small American beach towns that set the tone for the summer.
It’s also a great way to discover authors you wouldn’t usually take a chance on, and to support authors with page reads on the Kindle if you have favourites who self-publish. You can be among the first to read their latest releases, but don’t need to shell out to purchase each book individually.
I still wouldn’t recommend it after the free trial ends. Spending 11 dollars a month (132 dollars a year) seems a waste, when there are 1) libraries, 2) Free Little Libraries, and 3) Stuff Your Kindle days for almost every genre.
I also found it very hard to cancel and got surprised with another month charged to my credit card after I thought I’d gotten it removed. I hate credit card surprises.
Happy e-reading!
Holly
